Stress Echocardiogram
|
A stress echocardiogram compares ultrasound pictures of the heart taken before and after exercising on a treadmill. This ultrasound uses sound waves to form images of your heart muscle and valves. After baseline pictures have been taken, you will be asked to exercise on a treadmill while your heart rate, blood pressure and EKG tracings are being monitored. When you have reached your peak heart rate, we will have you lie down on a table where we will take additional pictures of your heart. Abnormalities on this test may indicate possible blockages in one of more of the coronary (heart) arteries or the presence of an abnormal heart rhythm.

Test Preparation: No caffeine for 12 hours prior to the test. Do not apply any lotions or creams to the chest wall. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Please hold your beta-blocker the morning of the test unless your physician specifies otherwise or your blood pressure is greater than 140/90. Beta-blockers include Toprol and Lopressor (metoprolol), Tenormin (atenolol), Coreg (carvedilol), Inderal (propanolol), Corgard (nadolol), Ziac (bisoprolol), Labetalol or Pindolol. Take all other medications as usual.
