Cholesterol is a type of fat found in our bodies. Our livers make cholesterol and we also get cholesterol from the foods we eat. It’s normal to have cholesterol, as it’s an important part of a healthy body. However, when cholesterol levels become too high, you can get a build up of plaque in your blood vessels. Plaque is made of cholesterol and other materials circulating in your blood. As more plaque builds up, your arteries can narrow and stiffen. Eventually, enough plaque may build up to reduce blood flow through your arteries. This increases your risk of heart attack, stroke and other vascular disorders. |
