| Electrical Cardioversion |
|
| A cardioversion is a procedure where an electrical shock is delivered to the heart to convert an abnormal heart rhythm back to a normal rhythm. The electrical shock is delivered to the heart through special electrodes that are applied to the skin of the chest. The goal of the cardioversion is to disrupt the abnormal electrical circuit(s) in the heart and to restore a normal heart beat. A cardioversion is done at the hospital. Since the shock can be painful, an anesthesiologist or a specially trained nurse will administer intravenous (IV) sedation. Prior to and following the procedure, you may be given medications to prevent blood clots. You may also be started on medications to try and help prevent the abnormal heart rhythm from coming back. |
