| Baseline Sleep Study |
| To accurately diagnose sleep disorders, a person must spend at least one night in a sleep lab undergoing a sleep study (also known as polysomnography). Here, various non-invasive and painless monitors are placed on you, such as EEG, EKG, EMG, pulse oximeter, thermocoupler(s)and respiratory effort straps. In addition, a video camera will be focused on the patient to check for strange behaviors while asleep. During the night, you are observed and monitored from a nearby room. Everything is recorded for later review by a doctor. Sometimes, sleep apnea can be intermittent and this can require more than one night in a sleep lab. |

| A polysomnogram (poly-SOM-no-gram)or PSG, is the most common study for diagnosing sleep apnea. This test records: |
- Brain activity
- Eye movement and other muscle activity
- Breathing and heart rate
- How much air moves in and out of your lungs while you're sleeping
- The amount of oxygen in your blood

| A PSG is painless. You will go to sleep as usual, except you will have sensors on your scalp, face, chest, limbs and finger. The staff at the sleep center will use the sensors to check on you throughout the night. |

| A sleep specialist reviews the results of your PSG to see whether you have sleep apnea and how severe it is. He or she will use the results to plan your treatment. |

| On the Day of your Study |
- Do not eat or drink caffeinated products (coffee, tea, chocolate, soda) past 12 noon
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages or use recreational drugs.
- Do not exercise later than 6 pm that evening.
- Avoid use of excessive hair styling products (hair spray, gel, etc), makeup and body creams
- Remove acrylic nails and nail polish from index fingers
